Fall is fabulous in the Hudson Valley, and its renowned beauty is a reason artists and people of great wealth gravitated there. Join us as we visit two remarkable historic houses, both on lovely grounds along the Hudson River. First we’ll see Sunnyside, the Gothic cottage that was home to Washington Irving, author of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” and “Rip Van Winkle”. On our guided tour here, we’ll learn about Irving’s eventful life and also, since it’s Halloween season, about how he inspired our sense of what’s spooky. After lunch at a nearby pub, we’ll head to Lyndhurst Mansion, former home to one of America’s wealthiest men, the railroad tycoon and financier Jay Gould. The interior of this Gothic Revival mansion hit TV screens a few years back in the HBO series “The Gilded Age” as the home of the fictional “old money” Fane family. In the same series, Gould himself was the model for the character George Russell, the “new money” man. We’ll have a guided tour of the mansion, then enjoy some autumn color on a short stroll on the grounds. At both houses visitors need to go up a staircase to reach the second floor.
