Spend a day in New York discovering lesser-known places with fascinating stories. Our first stop is the Basilica of St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral, the original St. Patrick’s Cathedral before the grand, renowned St. Patrick’s was built. On our guided tour we’ll learn the history of this cathedral and descend into the catacombs beneath it, the final resting place to a number of prominent New Yorkers. After our tour, we’ll visit the lively Chelsea Market, where you’ll choose lunch on your own from a number of tasty offerings. Next, we’ll visit the Morgan Library and Museum, once home to Gilded Age financier J.P. Morgan, where we can explore the exhibits of his wide-ranging collection of art, rare books and illuminated manuscripts. We’ll also visit a special exhibition about his longtime librarian, Belle da Costa Greene, the subject of the best-selling historical novel “The Personal Librarian.” We’ll end the day with a guided tour of the remarkable Morgan mansion.
