From Beginnings to Magnficient

$186.00

Cost includes transportation, entrance fees, guided tour, lunch and tips.

From a simple graveyard to magnificent gardens modeled on those at Versailles, explore touchstones in Delaware life. We’ll start the day at Old Swedes Historic Site, on the Christina River. Along this water route used by the Lenape people, Swedish and Finnish settlers established Fort Christina, named after their faraway queen. After a tour of Old Swedes Church, we’ll visit the old burial ground and an early 18th century Swedish farmhouse. After lunch at a riverside restaurant, we’ll head to the magnificent Nemours Estate, built in 1910 by the duPont family, whose industrial rise, great wealth, and philanthropy transformed Delaware. The estate’s fabulous gardens, complete with fountains, mazes, towers, and monuments, were inspired by the grounds of Versailles. In the Chauffeur’s Garage, we’ll see the collection of high-end cars owned by the duPonts. You’ll tour on your own, with docents posted around the estate to tell stories and answer questions.
