Description
The FBI recently reported that hate crimes in the US have risen sharply to their highest levels on record. Governmental and private agencies are grappling to understand why prejudice, racism, and intergroup violence are so prevalent and how we can return to the level of civility most Americans claim to yearn for. This class will be examining the history and current expressions of anti-Black racism; anti-Jewish, anti- Catholic, and anti-Muslim attitudes; opposition to immigration, especially for people from Asia and Latin America; and homophobia and transphobia. We will be looking at how factors of race, religion, socio-economic class, and political beliefs affect how Americans feel about one another.
