Come with us to New York’s Whitney Museum of American Art to see the new, multimedia “Edges of Ailey” exhibit celebrating legendary choreographer Alvin Ailey, the recipient of Kennedy Center Honors and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. This is the first large-scale museum exhibition to reflect on the life, work, and legacy of this visionary artist, who founded his American Dance Theater with the purpose of enriching modern dance and preserving the uniqueness of the African-American cultural experience. We will have a guided tour of the exhibit, then we’ll have time to explore the museum independently. Lunch will be on your own at or near the Whitney. In the afternoon, weather permitting, we will walk to the Little Island, a former pier reimagined as an urban oasis, with two acres of lovely landscaping and views across the river. There, you can explore on your own, or find a spot to simply enjoy the scenery.
Note: Some performances may be scheduled during our time at the museum. Tickets to those aren’t available for group purchase. If you’re interested you’ll need to check the museum website and buy them in advance on your own. We expect to depart from the museum at 2:15 p.m.
