Harlem has long been a hub of Black creativity, from jazz to literature to the visual arts. Join us on a walking tour between 135th and 125th streets to explore its rich history and unique cultural contributions. Our guides will describe Harlem\u2019s beginnings as a Dutch village in the 17th century, then move through time to its development into the \u201cCapital of Black America\u201d in the early 20th century. They\u2019ll detail the remarkable artistic, literary, and musical flowerings during the Harlem Renaissance, and the ways this groundswell of creativity laid the foundation for the early civil rights movement. Next we will have a down-home soul food lunch at the United House of Prayer for all People. Then we\u2019ll head for a guided tour at the newly rebuilt Studio Museum, which has been a nexus for Black artists since its founding in 1968. After a 7-year closure for reconstruction, the museum reopened in November 2025. It now occupies a new 82,000-square-foot building which affords much-expanded space for exhibits, education, and events.
