Music and Gossip in the Gilded Age
During the Gilded Age, between the end of the Civil War and the beginning of World War I, technological and cultural innovations changed the lifestyles of the successful few and the many who struggled. This course will examine the “new normal” for the rich, for the poor and those in between. With visual aids we’ll explore the fabulous mansions of Newport, Hull House in Chicago, many sites in New York, and we’ll meet the Vanderbilts, Mamie Fish, Jane Addams and more. We’ll listen to music popular at the time including ragtime, dance music and art music.
