Harlem has long been a hub of Black creativity, from jazz to literature to the visual arts. Join us on a walking tour between 135th and 125th streets to explore its rich history and unique cultural contributions. Our guides will describe Harlem’s beginnings as a Dutch village in the 17th century, then move through time to its development into the “Capital of Black America” in the early 20th century. They’ll detail the remarkable artistic, literary, and musical flowerings during the Harlem Renaissance, and the ways this groundswell of creativity laid the foundation for the early civil rights movement. Next we will have a down-home soul food lunch at the United House of Prayer for all People. Then we’ll head for a guided tour at the newly rebuilt Studio Museum, which has been a nexus for Black artists since its founding in 1968. After a 7-year closure for reconstruction, the museum reopened in November 2025. It now occupies a new 82,000-square-foot building which affords much-expanded space for exhibits, education, and events. After our guided tour, we’ll have some time to explore the galleries on our own.
