Come follow in the steps of freedom seekers who found aid in Lancaster County along the Underground Railroad. Our day will begin with a visit to the Mifflin Farm in Wrightsville, where people fleeing enslavement found temporary refuge with a Quaker family, Jonathan and Susanna Wright Mifflin and their son Samuel, often after being ferried across the Susquehanna River by Robert Loney, a free Black man. We’ll have a guided tour of the recently opened house, barn. and property, which also was the site of a Civil War battle. Then we’ll head to Lancaster, where you’ll choose lunch on your own from among the variety of choices at the Southern Market, No. 2 on USA Today’s 10 Best Food Halls list. It offers cuisine from deli to sushi and lots in between. Next we’ll cross the street to the brand new Thaddeus Stevens & Lydia Hamilton Smith Center for History and Democracy, which explores the stories of freedom seekers and their allies through artifacts and immersive media experiences, and considers how the struggle for equality shapes the U.S. today. Stevens was a Congressman and a leading advocate for freedom and equality. Smith was his longtime household manager and confidante and a businesswoman in her own right. Their house is preserved as a part of the Center.
