Holiday Lights & Sparkle: Longwood Gardens & Du Pont’s First Home

$195.00

Cost includes transportation, entry fees, guided tours, snacks, a $20 voucher toward dinner, and driver tip.

Travel with us to fete the holidays amid beautiful winter blooms and a fabulous feast of lights. First up is the Hagley Museum in Wilmington, DE, for a guided tour of the first du Pont family home in America, Eleutherian Mills, decked out for the holidays with lights, ribbons, and bright poinsettias. At the residence, our docent will highlight family artifacts and decorative arts that bring to life 150 years of the family story—one that connects closely with major events in U.S. history, from the Louisiana Purchase to the Civil War and beyond. On a trolley tour of the grounds, we’ll see remains of the gunpowder works, begun in 1802, that established the family fortune, and we may even witness a tiny gunpowder burst. Next we’ll head to Longwood Gardens, where we’ll find a wonderland of holiday lights, scents, and sounds. Immerse yourself in an array of decorated trees and colorful flowers in the grand Conservatory. Explore the 32,000-square-foot West Conservatory, where indoor gardens grow amid canals and fountains. Outside, wander through gardens dazzling with a half-million lights and lighted fountains; pause if you wish at a cozy fire pit. Dinner will be at a time of your choice, in one of Longwood’s tented eateries. You’ll have a $20 voucher to apply to the meal. Remember to check the weather and dress appropriately for the evening garden stroll. Note: Please have lunch before the trip.
