Take a ride with us to the Central Jersey Shore where Bruce Springsteen got his start and is still busy creating. We’ll begin our day in Asbury Park, the title city of Bruce’s first album and the place where he developed his musical style. We’ll delve into the city’s past with a visit to the Victorian house museum where author Stephen Crane lived in the late 1800s in the rapidly developing seaside resort. Our guides from Asbury Park Historical Society, now headquartered in the house, will tell us tales of the Crane family and describe the city’s history, from its heyday as a grand resort to its later ups and downs. Weather permitting, they’ll also take us on a short walking tour highlighting local architecture. After lunch at an Italian restaurant, we’ll head to the new Bruce Springsteen Center for American Music in Long Branch. The newly built 32,000-square-foot center, opened in June, includes galleries, research archives, interactive experiences and a theater. On our guided tour, we’ll explore exhibits that detail Springsteen’s career and creative process and illuminate the history of American music in all its diversity of artists and genres. We’ll also view a short documentary by award-wining director Thom Zimny about Springsteen’s role in American music. Note that two upper floors in the Crane house are accessible only by staircases.
